7 Top Trader Joe's Cheese Board Cheeses, According to Super Fans

Jul 11, 2023

There were some rumblings that butter boards would take over cheese and charcuterie in late 2022. But, like the idea that Threads would be the next big thing on social media, those rumors seemed to fizzle out as quickly as they started.

And as much as we love butter, we're always in support of a great cheese board. It's easy and customizable and is always a hit. The only semi-stressful part is finding tasty options that fit your budget, but luckily Trader Joe's can help on that front.

It seems that at least one other person, u/sexygeogirl, has the same thoughts. She was gearing up to host a birthday party for her husband and headed to the Trader Joe's Subreddit for cheese advice (as you do in 2023). "Our favorite one so far is the caramelized onion cheddar, so that’s one," she wrote. "We like cheeses that are full of bold flavor, but subtle ones are good too."

And 94 comments later, she had more cheese advice than she perhaps bargained for. We sifted through the comments to find the 7 fan-favorite Trader Joe's cheese board cheeses. Here's the unofficial but highly accurate list, according to Reddit.

The original poster (OP) mentioned she was definitely getting this cheese, and many Redditors supported that decision. This cheese blends seemingly contradictory characteristics—it's creamy but firm and sweet but savory. The cherry on top? As the name implies, you'll find caramelized onion bits throughout the cheese.

This cheese was mentioned early and often in the thread—even people who typically "hard pass" on brie will gobble it up. "I don't care for Brie, but I really like this one," wrote a fan. The soft, creamy cheese that spreads well has so much Reddit hype that people who have never tried it are determined to give it a shot. "Mushroom Brie?!?!" commented a highly-intrigued fan. "Sounds amazing! I will have to look for it next time." We're also going to keep it in mind for making next-level baked brie.

The limited-edition spread inspired by the bold red wine has its own fan club on Reddit, with users calling it "to die for." Tips from fans include serving the cheese "drizzled with a touch of balsamic glaze and a piece of fig" or with "fig jam."

Trader Joe's

This classic Trader Joe's pick is a mainstay on people's cheese boards. "We just got this for the first time last week, and it’s really living up to the hype—especially for the price," wrote a fan. (It's $3.99 for a 7-ounce package.) The unexpected part of this cheese is that it tastes like aged cheddar at first, but turns tangy, slightly crumbly, subtly salty and totally delicious and you continue eating.

As you keep scrolling through the thread, things start to get a bit testy as users wonder how the heck their favorite Trader Joe's cheeses haven't been mentioned. Exhibit A: White Stilton with Apricots. Many people expect a blue cheese when they hear "Stilton," but the English cheese comes in two varieties: blue, which has the characteristic blue cheese taste and smell and the milder white Stilton. This cheese is the latter, and get a fruity hit from dried apricots. "I had to scroll way too far to find the apricot Stilton," says one commenter. "That paired with nectarines right now is chef’s kiss,"

One Redditor—also shocked that their favorite cheese hadn't been mentioned—called out the Cambozola. "How has no one said the Cambozola? It’s a bleu-veined, triple-cream Brie," the person wrote. Fans of this cheese may also want to look out for the Truffle Brie, which comes out around the winter holidays and is another favorite of this TJ's cheese connoisseur.

What does nearly three years of aging do to a cheese? With this one, it creates a Parmesan-like texture, rich caramely notes and crunchy, salty crystals that keep you coming back for more. This subtly sweet cheese plays well with others (meats, cheeses and wines). It's also very versatile and is great for grating over pasta, whizzing into pesto and shaving over salads. Basically, you can use this cheese anywhere you would use Parmesan.
